![]() ![]() The paper includes a synthesis of the new data gathered in the Acheulean sites of the Escarpments in the course of the present research project and, finally, a regional interpretation of the early Acheulean of the Lake Natron. If Lake Natron, in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, had a color theme, it would be pink. It also reviews some of the main discussions related to the Type Section technology, the bifacial hierarchical centripetal method hypothesis, and the Oldowan–Acheulean dichotomy for the attribution of the lithic samples in the framework of the archaeological record of Peninj. This paper presents a synthesis of the history of research in Lake Natron and the geology of the Peninj Group. It is in the Gregory Rift, which is the eastern branch of the East African Rift. As a result of this long-lasting scientific effort, the variety of geological, contextual, technological, and spatial information gathered so far can shed light on a number of aspects related to the early Acheulean record identified in the three different archaeological areas of Peninj (the Type Section, the North and the South Escarpments ). Lake Natron is a salt or alkaline lake located in north Ngorongoro. In 2007, fieldwork was resumed in the area and a new project is currently in progress. Beginning with the seminal project led by Glynn Isaac in the decades of 1960s and 1980s, other research programs have been carried out in Peninj since then, particularly the landscape archaeology approach undertaken by M. These are soon dwarfed by the sight of Kerimasi Crater and, finally, the active Oldoinyo Lengai – whose name means “mountain of god" in the Maasai language. To the north of this track stands a handful of great mounds – the remains of extinct volcanoes. It is hot but with the Rift Valley rising up on your left hand side, the landscape is increasingly dramatic. It is also some of the most dramatic scenery we have seen in Tanzania and the journey here is worth it for the views alone. But for those who do choose to visit Natron, they are rewarded with an area that is far off the beaten track and sees relatively little tourism. This area is hot and often very dry and dusty – so certainly for the more intrepid traveller. This spectacular area sits just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater and forms part of Africa's immense Great Rift Valley.
